Ready, set, run!

Sunday 09 September 2018

Runners will be hoping for sunshine and smiles when they stride for the finish line in today’s half marathon run by the Jersey Spartans - the 39th to ever be organised by the club.

Running from the tarmac road of St. Clement up through the country lanes in the North Eastern parishes and back down to FB Fields, the annual event is just short of 13 miles long and is the most southerly half marathon in the British-Isles.

Event organiser Chris Dorey hopes the day runs smoothly, with over 300 runners already signed up and an expectation of a few more last minute registrations.

“Previously the race was run in November and weather conditions have been horrific with gale force winds and lots of rain. The event has now moved to September and the current forecast looks promising, so hopefully this year’s run is more pleasurable for the competitors.”

There are three categories on offer for those entering. There is the individual half marathon event. The relay event is split into teams of three, with each runner completing approximately 4.3 miles each, while there is also a 3k fun run for all ages.

Those running the half marathon must be over 18 and those joining in with the relay must be over 15.

Runners will receive water and snacks and finishers will get a medal and, if they're lucky, a special t-shirt. Competitors shouldn't be worried if they don't get one on the day, however - they haven't 'run out', but do seem to have "lost" en route to the island. If they don't make it on time, they could get sent in the post, Chris explained.

Changeover points for the relay, will be at St. Martin's School and the Seymour Pub. Coaches will be on hand to take participants to and from their changeover points.

This year is the 39th half marathon organised by the club, and with the 40th anniversary coming up next year, they are looking for companies to sponsor the event, which would help with insurance, licensing fees and any organisational costs.
