Review: Story-telling takes centre stage at Samarès Manor

Wednesday 12 July 2017

The Samarès Players’ dynamic cast made even rain in Cyprus believable on the opening night of William Shakespeare’s ‘Othello’.

Despite the inclement weather, the players rose to the occasion; commanding the elements for an atmospheric and gripping evening of alfresco theatre.

Director Jacqui Patton placed the story at the centre of this energised take on tragedy. The simple and pared-back set placed the actors’ abilities at its forefront; an understandable decision given the strength of the cast.

The play pivoted around the electric charisma of its main characters. Andrew Oliveira was a formidable Othello whose vocal and physical strength commanded the stage; an energy redoubled by Jonny Liron who brought wit and threat in equal measure to his role as the villainous Iago.

Speaking about the rehearsal process, Jonny told Express: “It’s been very thorough with lots of attention given to each character’s motivation and emotions are throughout the play.

“The whole process has felt very organised and professional. For me personally, it’s been a joy to work with Andy and Jess again who I’ve not been in a play with for about ten years since youtheatre.”

It’s not often that iambic pentameter feels fresh, but the young cast breathed new life into this 17th century tale of heartbreak and betrayal. Highlights included Charlie Flynn’s effortlessly likeable portrayal of Othello’s Lieutenant, Cassio, as well as the chemistry between Desdemona (Jessica Perchard) and Emilia (Rhona Richards) who, windswept and weeping, made the piece’s denouement ever more moving.

‘Othello’ is on every evening at 7:30pm until Saturday. Tickets are £13 (£10 concessions) and are available from Jersey Arts Centre Box Office on 01534 700444 or on the door at Samarès Manor. Picnicking is from 6pm or the Herb Garden Café is open for food before the show.
