Second-hand not second best!

Saturday 25 November 2017

Acorn Enterprises is hosting the Channel Islands’ first ever 'Buy Nothing New Day' flash sale today from 09:00 to 16:00 in Trinity to raise awareness of its Acorn Reuse Centre project.

A large range of items will be on sale with the majority of goods for £5 or less. Buy Nothing New Day is set to follow Black Friday to give people an ethical shopping alternative.

Acorn Enterprises is the only Channel Island company that is part of the national Furniture Re-Use Network (FRN) trade association. The FRN launched Buy Nothing New day to dispel the myth that second-hand is second-best.

Steve Pearce, General Manager, Acorn Enterprises, said: “Black Friday is becoming more and more popular in Jersey with lots of islanders on the lookout for a bargain. When we heard about the FRN’s idea for re-use charities to hold a Buy Nothing New Day to contend with Black Friday we thought it was an excellent opportunity to raise awareness about reuse in Jersey.”

“On sale, we will have musical instruments, chairs, photo-frames, toys, mirrors, sports equipment and much more. This is a one-off sale to raise awareness for reuse and all money raised will be reinvested back into the charity. Customers will have exclusive access to our storage room and the opportunity to buy items that have never been seen on the shop floor before. We would like to thank Quilter Cheviot Investment Management for spending last Saturday helping us organise our goods for the sale.”

Craig Anderson, CEO, Furniture Re-use Network said: “FRN members rely on furniture donations to provide essential household goods to those in need but also to provide employment and volunteering opportunities.”

By attending the Buy Nothing New Day flash sale and supporting their Reuse Centre, Acorn say that customers are helping the island by:

  • reducing Jersey's waste and helping the environment;
  • creating jobs for Islanders with long term health difficulties and/or disabilities;
  • providing quality and reasonably priced goods for low-income families;
  • generating a revenue for the charity to reinvest so JET can continue to provide a top-
    quality service for clients.
