Six-inch cracks prompt survey of storm damage at St Catherine's

Ports of Jersey has engaged specialist contractors who will assess storm damage to a prominent island landmark before repair work can be scheduled.

St Catherine's Breakwater and the adjoining slipway were damaged as Storm Ciarán battered Jersey in early November, with cracks up to 15cm (six inches) wide and granite rocks being loosened from retaining walls.

Contractors from infrastructure consultancy AECOM will be inspecting the breakwater and adjoining slipway from Tuesday until 14 March.

A tornado later shown to be the most intense to affect the British Isles since 1954 passed across the south-east corner of the island during the early hours of 2 November, with some of the most severe impact being seen at Fliquet, just a few hundred metres north of St Catherine's.

While the survey work – which will incorporate drones, ground penetrating radar and analysis of surfaces – is being carried out, some public parking spaces will be temporarily unavailable in order that equipment used by the contractors can be stored.

Details of parking restrictions will be advised via signage.

A spokesperson for Ports of Jersey said repair work would be planned and undertaken once the results of the survey have been analysed.
