Plans to change Springfield to prepare for running of the Bulls

Football fans will be able cheer on their side from either end of Springfield Stadium, if Planning agrees.

The Government, which owns all the facilities there, has applied to create two standing spectator areas at the northern and southern ends of the pitch in anticipation of not only an end to the current covid restrictions, but also the increasing success and popularity of the Jersey Bulls football side.

In a letter to Planning, the Government’s architect on the project writes: “The changes are to comply with Football Association regulations regarding stadiums. This is mostly led by the success of the Jersey Bulls football team who may be promoted this year and it is anticipated that they will be promoted again next year.

“At present there is no spectator areas at either end of the pitch and the main fence is just behind the goal positions. We are proposing to move the existing 3.2m high fencing and ball-stop netting so that we have a 3m-deep spectator area to the north and a 4m-deep spectator area to the south.”

If Planning approves the application, which is currently at the public advertising stage, the current fence and netting at both ends will be moved back and a new 1.1m-high fence will be built as a spectator barrier and artificial grass will be laid for the fans to stand on.
