St John's hiphoppers crowned schools' breakdancing champs

Jammerz from St John's School have hip-hopped their way to victory to take the title of Best Primary School Breakdance Crew 2016.

The young breakdancers busted some moves against the St Martin Mavericks crew in what turned out to be a very close battle amongst the b-boys and b-girls for top spot.

Total Mayhem's Scott Mills has had the two young crews in training this term for the big competition at St Martin's School, teaching them all the five elements of Breakin' - "Top Rock", "Go Downs", "Floorwork", "Freezes" and "Power Moves".

He said: "What an amazing battle it was, the kids were simply amazing, it was so hard choosing a winner as the standard was that close. After the battle it was a draw, so each crew had to decide one crew member to do their routine again in a one on one battle to take the title."

Scott started learning Breakdance in Nottingham in 2009 and returned to the Island to pass on his knowledge and skills to the next generation of Hip-Hoppers. He's been running workshops in schools since 2010 and has taught his moves to over 2,500 pupils in schools, youth clubs and other youth based organisations. Some have even made the jump to his "Junior crew" and have been performing with him around the Island.

He said: "All the b-boys and b-girls should be immensely proud of what they have achieved in just six hours tuition over 6 weeks! They honestly blew me away with their energy, attitude and enthusiasm. The pure Hip-Hop way! There may even be talk of a rematch at St John's in the New Year so watch this space!"

All the crews' members took home a medal and the St John Jammerz will be presented with their trophy in their school assembly early next term.
