Local students are helping to design 3D-printed tiles as part of a project to create a 'living' sea wall in the Elizabeth Marina.

Ports began a pilot scheme last year, using tiles that replicate the nooks and crannies that occur naturally on rocky seashores.

The tiles are then attached to vertical, smooth sea walls to create an environment where marine species can settle.

Students from Jersey College for Girls and Les Quennevais are now helping to research and design tiles, which will be 3D-printed and affixed to a sea wall in the Elizabeth Marina.

Head of maritime operations, Louise Stafford, said: "We want to play a leading role in developing a sustainable future for our Island, and where better to focus than the infrastructure that makes up the harbour."

She added: "These tiles will encourage marine life to settle in the fabric of our harbours, and I’m delighted that the Island’s students can take part in this initiative, using their imagination at the same time as learning about the marine environment."
