Express has launched a survey to gauge islanders’ feelings of safety and whether they have experienced sexual harassment in Jersey.
Last week’s news of the death of 33-year-old Sarah Everard in South London - combined with the findings of a recent YouGov survey exposing the extent of sexual harassment against women in the UK - have prompted thousands of women to take to social media to share their views.
While Jersey is considered by many to be a ‘safe' place, these national conversations have prompted local women to speak out about their experiences to show that there are also issues to be addressed locally.
This week, Express has been sharing a series of articles on their experiences of sexual harassment of varying degrees, steps they take to feel safer when they walk alone at night, what needs to be done to stamp out the issue, and why, according to local Police, calling out more 'minor' harassment could help prevent more serious sexual crimes.
Express is now launching a survey to ask islanders about their experience of sexual harassment in the island and their feelings towards safety.
It includes 11 questions and covers both Jersey and the Bailiwick of Guernsey.
Islanders are invited to take part even if they haven’t experienced the issues raised in the questions.
Jersey Action Against Rape (JAAR), which was Express' chosen charity last year, has voiced its support for the survey.
“Jersey Action Against Rape welcomes the Bailiwick Express survey, which follows a series of articles on the subject of sexual harassment," Manager Jayne Gruchy said.
"Recent events have opened up important conversations about sexual harassment and women’s feelings of safety. We believe it’s useful to gauge how people feel about their safety in the island and what could be done to help them feel safer.
"JAAR will be interested to see the results. We are here to support any islander affected by sexual assault and sexual harassment.”
