Big Teddy Bears Picnic at Durrell

Saturday 25 June 2016

Children are being encouraged to dress up as bears and take their favourite teddies along to Durrell today to meet theirs at a big Teddy Bears Picnic.

The event at the Wildlife Park has been organised to celebrate the fact that their baby bear now has a name.

The Andean Bear Cub, who is now six month’s old was named “Raymi” – the Quechua word for “celebration” – after a public competition that saw 200 suggestions flood in.

The Trust raised £1,525 from the competition because every entrant had to donate to take part. The name “Raymi” was chosen by two entrants to Durrell’s competition – Azlanna Coote from St Lawrence, and another entrant from Australia.

Events Manager Paddy Haversham-Quaid said: “This is going to be a fabulous day where children and adults alike can bring their favourite teddy bear to meet ours. Do get here on time as at 11.30 a.m. there will be a special bear talk and hopefully Raymi will be his curious, playful self.

“Lee Durrell will announce our best dressed competition at 1 p.m. and don’t forget the oldest, most well travelled and most loved bear competition’s together with various other competitions to enter. There will be plenty of parking so don’t miss this unique event!”

It's cheaper to get in today, half price for kids and £10 for adults and if you haven't packed a picnic, there will be some on sale at the Dodo Café.
