A Jersey Deputy says there's thousands of us who could be having our say on whether the UK should leave the European Union.
St Helier No. 2 Deputy Sam Mézec is urging anyone who has moved to the Island from the UK in the last 15 years to vote on 'Brexit'.
Under UK election rules British citizens who leave still have the right to vote in all elections and referendums at their old address for 15 years.
Deputy Mézec said: “There will potentially be thousands of Islanders who are eligible to vote in the upcoming referendum because they used to live in the UK, including many Jersey-born residents who studied at British universities, who have absolutely no idea that they still have this right.”
“Over the last few weeks we have seen several prominent Islanders coming forward to publicly express their concerns about the effect that ‘Brexit’ could have on Jersey’s economy, in particular the finance industry.
“States Members have also been briefed about the situation and it is clear that there is serious uncertainty about what would happen to Jersey after Brexit. Since Jersey’s future is inextricably tied to the future of the UK and its relationship with the EU, I hope that many Islanders will take advantage of their democratic rights and vote for what they believe will be in Jersey’s best interests.”
If yore eligible, you have until 16 May to register to vote and you can do it here.
