Three men were caught drink-driving during a police campaign in December.
Officers stopped 3,218 vehicles to crack down on people drink-driving during the Christmas party season.
Three people were arrested, one of them following a tip off by a member of the public. This figure mirrors the number of arrests during the drink-driving campaign in December 2016. Both years were below the nine arrests in 2015.
All those caught committing the offence were male - men made up around 80% of all the 126 arrests related to drink driving in 2017.
Inspector Paul Smith, who led the campaign, said: “...the low number of arrests is a very encouraging sign, we hope this means the message is getting through to people of how dangerous it is to get behind the wheel when you have had a drink.
“...we are also grateful to those members of the public who called us with any concerns as it is invaluable to have eyes and ears everywhere in the community."
Commenting on the gender trend of drink drivers, Inspector Smith added, “...what is worrying is the percentage of male drink drivers, this is something we will look at in 2018 to see how we can tackle it and reduce the numbers even further. ”
