The Tiger Who Came to...Jersey Post?

Monday 19 June 2023

A new set of stamps have been issued to commemorate what would have been the 100th birthday of a beloved children's author and illustrator.

Featured across the set of eight stamps released last week by Jersey Post are illustrations from Judith Kerr's The Tiger Who Came to Tea, Mog the Forgetful Cat and The Crocodile Under, among other much-loved stories.

Philatelic Marketing Manager Rachel MacKenzie said Jersey Post was "honoured to have been given permission to reproduce a selection on this set of stamps" and excited to be "paying tribute to such a wonderful author and illustrator, and one who has left a lasting impression on so many people’s childhoods.”

She described Judith Kerr's illustrations as "exquisite, and so full of warmth, character and imagination".

Juliet Matthews, Colour Publisher at HarperCollins Children's Books, described the stamps as "a wonderful celebration of her beautifully illustrated covers of classic stories that will continue to entertain young readers for generations to come".

Judith Kerr's amazing life story

Born on 14 June 1923 in Berlin, Judith Kerr escaped from Hitler's Germany with her parents and brother in 1933 when she was just nine years old.

The family arrived in England in 1936, having passed through Switzerland and France. There, Judith went to 11 different schools, worked in the Red Cross during the war, and won a scholarship to the Central School of Arts and Crafts in 1945.

She went on to become an artist and a BBC television scriptwriter, before becoming the beloved author and illustrator of children's books so many know her for today.

After being awarded an OBE in 2012 for her services to children's literature, Kerr went on to be named Illustrator of the Year at the British Book Awards in 2019 before sadly passing away later in the year.
