Can your business house a tortoise for the summer?

Thursday 09 March 2023

Jersey Zoo is looking for shops, offices, cafes, restaurants, or other indoor locations to host one of the 65 miniature tortoise figurines that will make up the St Helier 'shop window' Tortoise Trail this summer.

These miniature tortoises have been designed by different schools, community groups and charities across the island.

Businesses who wish to host a miniature tortoise should have a space that can be constantly visible for locals and is able to be decorated to create magnificent photo opportunities for those following the island trail.

The smaller tortoises can be seen from the 16 June before the main trail, featuring giant tortoise sculptures created by artists, can be observed by islanders for the first time on the 1 July.

After the trail has ended, all the tortoises will be united together for a last farewell weekend in September before the smaller models are given back to the local groups who created them.

The larger sculptures will subsequently be up for auction on the 21 September to raise money for a new tropical house to home a variety of endangered reptiles and amphibians at the Jersey Zoo.

This is an important focus for Durrell as an international charity striving to help save species from extinction, and encouraging people to enjoy a deeper connection with nature.

Project Manager for the Tortoise Takeover, Zoe Le Var explained the significance of the event: “Tortoise Takeover is all about connecting our entire community via a free inclusive event that makes everyone smile.

"The young tortoise trail is an important factor in achieving this, whilst also celebrating the creativity of Jersey’s young people and community groups."

If businesses can offer a space for the young tortoise sculpture in their workplace they should contact Julia Voce at Julia.Voce@durrell.org
