Tourist filmed snatching Ray Bans apologises and sends them back

Wednesday 20 April 2022

A tourist who was caught on camera taking a pair of sunglasses off the counter of a bus and coach tour company has apologised and said he is posting them back.

Hundreds of people shared Facebook posts which included CCTV footage of a man wearing a blue-striped polo shirt taking the £130 pair of Ray Bans from the desk of Jersey Bus Tours on the Esplanade.

More people read a story yesterday on Express, which was also shared on social media.

Last night, the man in the image emailed Jersey Bus Tours to say he was posting them back.

The company’s co-owner Julien Le Baillif said: “So many people shared our post and the story on Bailiwick Express. The response was amazing.

“Yesterday, we also sent some emails to the bus station and a couple of hotels to help spread the word.

“We then received an email from the guy, who said that he had been notified by others that there was a CCTV image of him online."

And what did he have to say for himself?

“He said he was sorry, that at the time his wife had gone out to take a call and he thought they were hers, and that he felt awful and an idiot," according to Mr Le Bailiff.

“He added that he would post them back, so hopefully we will see them again in the next couple of days.”

The sunglasses, which belonged to Mr Le Baillif’s husband, were taken on Saturday by the man before he booked a coach tour. He put his name down as Glynn and paid with cash.

Mr Le Baillif added: “When the man emailed yesterday, I told him that we were due to see the police today, but we will tell them that the glasses are being returned and ask them not to take further action.

“It is amazing that so many people shared the posts, and it did work. Everyone came together to help, and we really appreciate it.

"Once we get the sunglasses back, we’ll write another post to thank everybody.”
