The police will take on a new base in Hill Street this week.
The town police unit is due to move to new premises at 23 Hill Street, the building previously used by the Property Holdings and Home Affairs departments, on Thursday.
Meanwhile, St Brelade Deputy John Young wants the States to cancel the sale of the current town police station Piquet House to a business. The Deputy wants to make sure the building is conserved and is asking states members to look at suitable alternative uses for the premises for public or community purposes.
The police say that it’s important for them to retain a base in the middle of town, and that it allows them to work more efficiently and makes life more convenient for the public.
Inspector Mark Coxshall said: “One of the Force’s aims is to be ‘visible and responsive’ and having a town base for the town police unit allows them to do that.
“They can spend the majority of their time out on the street, allowing them to avoid coming back to HQ when they need to update files, make telephone calls or complete essential paper.
“The centralised location is also aimed at being considerate towards commercial needs of local traders, for example when statements need to be recorded, allowing them to get back to their businesses as quickly as possible. The position is similar for members of the public who might approach officers in town and saves them the inconvenience of needing to attend and make statements at our main police headquarters."
