Jersey has a new Lieutenant Governor.
Sir Stephen Dalton - a former jaguar fighter pilot - officially took the oath of office in front of a packed audience in the Royal Court earlier today.
Welcoming him to the Island, the Bailiff William Bailhache made reference to Sir Stephen's former job as Chief of Air Staff during which he had to, "...identify an effective military strategy which could be managed within the significant financial constraints imposed by the national economic situation," and tongue-in-cheek, noted he was "...unlikely to face anything remotely similar in his new post."
Finishing off his speech of welcome to Jersey, Mr Bailhache said: "I wish you and Lady Dalton the most satisfying and happiest of sorties with us. May the Jersey sun shine warmly on your faces, our gentle breeze at your backs: may our Jersey Royals keep you nourished and the tranquility of our green lanes rise up to greet you!"
In reply Sir Stephen told the assembled audience that he and his wife were very much looking forward to involving themselves in Island life and particularly supporting local charities - something he'd already begun to do by taking part last week in the Swimarathon.
Tomorrow Sir Stephen will officially be attending his first States sitting.
