Police issue warning on scam job ad

Friday 02 December 2016

If you thought doing a bit of research and data gathering for an International accountancy firm for up to £760 a week sounded appealing...think again!

The Police say a recruitment ad in the JEP is a scam and has nothing to do with Deloitte and you'll be losing money rather than making it.

Officers are now investigating to try and track down the person who placed the ad.

They say anyone who would have responded to it would have been sent a foreign cheque for between £4,000 and £5,000 and would have been asked, once the cheque had cleared, to send a portion of it to an address using MoneyGram. The instructions come via an email from an address starting with the word "erinna".

It can take up to 10 days to find out that the banked cheque is either fake or stolen but Islanders will be left liable for whatever they've transferred via MoneyGram.

The police are warning you to be on your guard against scammers and if in doubt check whether an ad is legitimate by contacting them or Deloitte directly.
