New memorial to mark St Helier's fallen

Wednesday 12 February 2014

A new war memorial could be erected in St Helier to mark the sacrifice of the dozens of young men who left their homes in the parish to fight and die in World War One.

St Helier is the only one of the 12 parishes that does not have a dedicated war memorial, but Constable Simon Crowcroft says that one could be built to mark the centenary of the start of the war this year. He wants the memorial to be placed near the Cenotaph at The Parade, which was built in 1923 as a memorial to all Islanders who lost their lives during the world wars.

Mr Crowcroft will be discussing the proposals with the St Helier Roads Committee today.

He said: “We are looking at a number of ways that the parish can mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. We are mindful of the fact that there is no memorial to those from the parish who fell in the war, whereas all of the other parishes have them.

“There are half a dozen projects that we are considering, the most significant of which will be the creation of a memorial listing the names of all of the fallen, which will be situated somewhere in the vicinity of the Cenotaph. That is the appropriate place, because it is the focus of the events for Remembrance Sunday.”

Events are being planned around Europe to mark the centenary on Remembrance Sunday, 9 November.
