“We believe there are no more residents unaccounted for”

Thursday 15 December 2022

Nine islanders have now been confirmed to have died in the Pier Road explosion last weekend.

Police Chief Robin Smith said that "one further fatality" had been confirmed at the site of the collapsed Haut du Mont flats.

Mr Smith said emergency services believed there were 'no more residents that remain unaccounted for' but the search operation would continue until the site had been fully cleared.

Mr Smith said: "The families have been made aware of this announcement before the public and media and continue to be supported by our specially trained family liaison officers."

He added: "The fatalities have not yet been formally identified. The Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) process will be carefully considered and managed in a dignified and compassionate way.

"The thoughts of all of us at States of Jersey Police are with everyone affected, in particular those who lost loved ones in what has been a tragic incident for our Island and our community.

"May I continue to ask that the privacy of the families is respected."

The nine islanders have been confirmed as 72-year-old Peter Bowler, 71-year-old Raymond (Raymie) Brown, Romeu and Louise De Almeida (67 and 64 years), Derek and Sylvia Ellis (61 and 73 years), Ken (72) and Jane Ralph (71) and Billy Marsden (63).

They were remembered at a vigil service held in the Town Church last night, where loved ones and the heads of each of the island's Emergency Services lit candles.

A press conference with Police Chief Robin Smith, and the heads of the Fire and Ambulance Services, is due to be held at 14:00 today.
