Western Rural Day celebrates "temps passé"

Saturday 07 July 2018

The West Show Association will be celebrating Jersey's agriculture and horticultural traditions today, from 10:00 to 17:00, at Manor Farm in St. Peter as part of its first Western Rural Day.

During the day, there will be arena demonstrations of breezing, hay-turning, with a horse and a tractor, loading a hay van and then baling.

There will be opportunities to see animal husbandry, horse-shoeing and cows being milked. Vintage tractors, old machines, a winnowing machine (which sorts wheat from chaff) and an oat-crusher will also be displayed. Classic Herd will be demonstrating how to make cheese and butter.

Children will have an opportunity to see Jersey farm animals up close, to climb on straw bales and to take a horse and cart ride in a Jersey van.

The Jersey Association of the National Vegetable Society will set up a vegetable garden and a display of Jersey-grown vegetables. Entries to this year’s primary school vegetable and herb wheelbarrow display competition will also be on show. Many of the island’s primary schools will be competing to win the top prize of £1,000, second prize of£600 and third prize of £400, sponsored by the Co-Op.

Other activities will include a companion dog show run by the Jersey Dog Handlers’Association, spinning, traditional dancing and traditional fete games.

The Association will be selling Jersey bean crock, barbecued Classic Herd hamburgers and sausages, and Classic Herd ice-cream. Teas, coffees and home-made Jersey wonders and other cakes will also be on sale.

Constable Mike Jackson, the President of the Association, said: We are proud to give people a taste of agriculture and horticulture in Jersey and to keep rural activities of the island to the fore.

Colin Macleod, Chief Executive Officer of the Co-Op, added: “We are thrilled to be sponsoring this inaugural event. Western Rural Day is a great way of showcasing Jersey’s agricultural and horticultural traditions. It provides a great opportunity for the community to get together and learn about an important part of Island life."
