Knitter extraordinaire creates 100 baby hats as "thanks" to hospital

Jersey maternity ward staff have thanked a knitter extraordinaire after she created 100 hats for newborn babies.

After spending six weeks in hospital over Christmas, Beryl Carré set herself the knitting challenge as a way of giving back.

Now, the ward have presented Beryl with a certificate for her efforts, which have seen her take to her needles to knit a whopping 100 hats over the last couple of months.

Speaking about her desire to give back after her six-week stay in hospital, Beryl told Express: "I thought I’d like to do something, but I’m not going to be able to do 100 press-ups or walk 100 miles or anything."

Having knitted in her past - though "not for a long time" -  she settled on the challenge of knitting the hats for the babies, spending around two months putting the hats together.

Speaking about her process, she explained that she "paced" herself over a couple of months, doing it "when the mood took" her as a way of keeping "occupied" and "activated".

"Once you’ve got into the pattern on these they’re quite straightforward, and you can just sit there and watch the television and and it’s quite a relaxing thing to do," she said.

This week, Beryl was presented a certificate of thanks - including a picture of one of her influences, Captain Tom - by the maternity ward. Since receiving the award, she joked that now she was now "just waiting on my Blue Peter badge!"

And it doesn't look like she'll be stopping there, saying that she'll be back to her needles for more knitting soon.

"At the moment I’m making a blanket for the dog and one for the cat, and once I’ve done that, and I haven’t got that to contend with anymore, I shall allow myself to knit more hats for the babies," Beryl said, adding that mittens are also on the agenda.

"It was fantastic to welcome Beryl onto Maternity to present her with a certificate of recognition," the Government said on Twitter.

"Thank you so much, Beryl!"
