World Cancer Day run raises over £5k for local cancer charity

Saturday 10 February 2024

Islanders came together on World Cancer Day last week to raise over £5,000 for a local cancer charity in what is now set to become an annual event.

On Sunday 4 February, the inaugural ‘Medicann 5 or 10k, Your Way’ event took place in aid of Jersey Cancer Relief.

The charity fundraiser saw islanders walk or run either 5k or 10k.

For 10k participants, the event started at Les Quennevais Sports Centre car park, whilst those completing the 5k began at St Aubin.

The finish line for both races was at the end of The Esplanade, across the road from the Medicann Clinic at the Elizabeth Castle Ferry Kiosk.

The event raised a total of £5,188 to help Jersey Cancer Relief support local people who are managing life with cancer and needing financial support.

Following the success of the first ‘Medicann 5 or 10k, Your Way’, the fundraiser is now set to become an annual event.

Medicann patient Rose Shepherd, who previously opened up to Express about living with Stage 4 Metastatic Breast Cancer, took part in the walk.

Ahead of the event, she said: "Every donation, regardless of size, will make a meaningful impact to the great work done by Jersey Cancer Relief, and by coming together on World Cancer Day, we can collectively help lessen the burden faced by those affected."

After taking part in the event, Pam Aubert, CEO of Jersey Cancer Relief, said: “It was a wonderful day on Sunday, I enjoyed taking part and seeing those who came out in support of the event.

"Thank you so much to everyone who participated and donated. £5,000 is a wonderful amount raised from this inaugural event and will go towards helping ease the cost of cancer for islanders."

Gary Whipp, CEO of Medicann and founder of the event, said: “It was such a great turn out on Sunday and I hope that everyone enjoyed it.

"It was so lovely to see families come together in support of World Cancer Day, and next year, we will be back, bigger and better."
