May is breaking wet records

Thursday 18 May 2017

No one is taking about drought today, that was soooo last month. Yesterday we had two week's rainfall in one day, making it the wettest 17 May on record, with 29.5mm recorded at the airport, 12mm more than the total set in 1935.

With two weeks to go before the end of the month, it looks like May could break some more records. 72mm of rain have been recorded so far this month which is over 20mm more than the average rainfall of 54.7mm.

But however exceptional it was, Wednesday's rainfall didn't beat the record for wettest day in May as 42.2mm fell on 21 May1928.

Most of the rain fell during the day, as readings in late afternoon showed a total of 24.9mm at the airport and the very wet conditions prompted the Police to urge Islanders to be careful on the roads, after they had to deal with a series of road accidents.

While the weather front causing the heavy rainfall has moved down to France, conditions are not set to dry up soon and the Met Office says that while they are expecting sunny patches, showers are also on the map for the next two days. However, the weekend should be drier with up to 19degrees on Sunday and  even warmer temperatures starting from Monday.
