REVIEW: An ‘egg-squisite’ brunch

Monday 03 August 2020

Isn’t it nice to be back (almost) to normal?

Oh, the joys of being able to enjoy unlimited time outdoors, barbecues on the beach and leisurely strolls by the seaside without worrying about a nasty virus and how long you have been outside for.

We still have to maintain ‘physical distancing’ and keep away from each other, but, if you are an introvert like me, this is more of a blessing than a curse.

If you asked me what I missed the most during lockdown, socialisation wouldn’t be at the top of my list. Sure, I’ve missed seeing my friends in the flesh, but I haven’t missed crowded terraces, loud pubs and busy shops – in fact I have marvelled at the empty streets and the deserted beaches and enjoyed the peace and quiet they brought.

What I have missed though is travel, hugs and beach cafés, in that order. While the first two are still out of the question at the time of writing (anyone getting cabin fever yet?), the recent easing of lockdown restrictions have meant the latter have reopened – or in some cases opened for the first time ever.

Before the C-word struck, I had been looking forward to the opening of The Good Egg Beach Café in Havre des Pas. If the fact it was located in one of my favourite places in the island wasn’t enough to automatically make me a customer, I was lured in by the prospect of pancakes, halloumi burgers and breakfast wraps.

But then, by the time the café should have opened, the island went into lockdown and I had to resort to making my pancakes myself - it was a long eight weeks!

Recently, The Good Egg was finally able to crack open its doors and I didn’t waste time joining the physically-distanced queue to get a nice breakfast without any effort (from me at least).

The most difficult part of the whole process was definitely choosing only one (possibly two) item to order. The menu makes everything sound yummy and wholesome and I am a sucker for such things, so believe me when I say I almost ordered pancakes, a vegan breakfast wrap, a burger and a beach breakfast all in one go – I am only human after all.

In the end, I ordered none of the above and went for a ‘Beach Bum Bowl’ (try saying that very fast) which consists of – I quote - a ‘tropical smoothie bowl, topped with fresh fruits, coconut flakes, homemade granola & honey’.

It was as nice and refreshing as it sounds. I had never had a smoothie bowl, but I have since recreated several and they do make breakfast that little bit better while increasing my daily fruit intake.

That being said my skills and gusto do not equal that of The Good Egg and I have since returned for a second helping which did not disappoint.

Also, it’s worth noting in times like these that the team couldn’t be more helpful in helping patrons keeping their distances – several people, including yours truly, opted for eating directly on the beach instead of using the café’s seating area and the Good Eggs brought our orders directly to us, even trusting us to wander off with their cutlery and plates. (Yes, I did bring them back!)

This meant I was able to enjoy my ‘Beach Bum Bowl’ sitting comfortably on a bench as I watched the waves roll in – which is exactly what I had missed during lockdown.

I couldn’t recommend the place more – the food is great, the people are nice and the view is banging – what more do you want?
