REVIEW: Reflecting on summer-thai-me in the bay...

Saturday 22 October 2022

I know we’ve all gone back to our respective hamster wheels, but whilst you read this article, let’s pretend we’re still in the height of summer, soaking up every ray of sunshine we can and I'm sat in lovely company at the Old Station Café enjoying a delicious meal…

This summer, I popped my Old Station Café cherry, and I am furious at myself for not going before. I missed out big time all those years.

A beautiful view of St. Aubin’s Bay and Elizabeth Castle and even more gorgeous food – I was a fool, my friend. In my defence, I never pictured the Avenue as a top-notch dining location, but the café’s terrace is so pleasant and the team so lovely, you quickly forget where you are.

Plus, as mentioned above, the food is brilliant so it’s definitely worth the small inconvenience of a few noisy cars and sirens in the background.

I am not exaggerating when I say the Old Station Café’s pad thai is one of the best I have ever had. It possibly could even take the crown, previously held by the Dicq Shack, but I haven’t been there recently so I feel I should make a proper comparison, you know, for research purposes.

Whilst chicken is normally my meat of choice, I adventurously ordered pork with my pad thai and I didn’t regret it. The texture of the pork was amazing, with the chunks cut to perfection - thick enough they had some actual ‘meat’ to them but not so much that the pork was too chewy.

The rice noodles, the generous helping of toasted peanuts, the bean sprouts, the sauce; all complimented each other perfectly. I cannot remember ever having eggs in my pad thai before, but they were a nice addition.

It may not look like it from the picture, but the portion was on the generous side and, you guessed it, I left the station with a doggy bag in tow, ready for lunch the following day. (All my fellow diners did the same and spoiler alert: it was as good as the night before!)

I may have been able to finish my pad thai had I not been tempted by the king prawns wrapped in filo pastry – fellow gluten free friends, those are not gluten free sadly, but I couldn’t resist! The clash of textures between the squishy prawns and the crunchy pastry was delightful and gustatively speaking, it was the bomb! (This is a technical term don’t come at me!)

Obviously, showing more restraint in the face of the delicious Thai Shrimp Crackers might have also helped. I do believe however that crackers go to the same ‘second stomach’ as desserts so in my humble opinion, the crackers were blameless… They were also shrimply awesome! (Yes I had to!)

All in all, the Old Station Café provided a delightful culinary escape! Great food, great service, it’s a 10/10 in my book and I’ll definitely be back soon, the curries look to die for!
