19 determined swimmers have completed the challenging crossing between Guernsey and Herm, after their plans were repeatedly disrupted due to unsuitable conditions.
After four postponements, the Paradise Swim finally took place on 28 September, supported by Try a Tri and Specsavers Market Street.
The group set off from St Sampson’s Harbour with each swimmer assisted by a kayaker for the journey.
Stronger than expected winds forced a route change but the swimmers successfully navigated the waters and were treated to crystal clear views of marine life on Herm’s eastern reef.
Amy Critchlow and Laura Fry supported from Try a Tri given their deep knowledge of local waters from competing.
Michael Todd, a Director of Specsavers in Market Street, was also on hand to help after completing the swim himself in 2022.
“It was a real challenge which required dedication to training and determination to complete,” he said. “Alongside the satisfaction of the swim is the comradery between swimmers, kayakers and support crew, all pushing themselves to achieve something special. It’s a pleasure to support the event alongside Try a Tri, giving back to those who helped me achieve my own swim.”
Ms Critchlow said the group “showed amazing determination to complete the epic challenge.
“The swimmers had endured a waiting game of six weeks for a good weather window, which made it even more satisfying to see the smiles once they’d got their toes on the Herm sand.”
The group and support team received commemorative gifts to mark the achievement.
