45 candidates were put forward on the first day of nominations ahead of Guernsey’s general election in June.
All candidates must be nominated by 16:00 on Wednesday afternoon.
In 2020, the first island wide poll saw 119 candidates nominated in total, with one withdrawing on medical grounds before the election.
Of those who have been nominated so far, 13 are sitting deputies, four are former deputies seeking re-election, and at least six are current or former parish politicians.
At least seven former election candidates are trying again while a handful of the candidates nominated so far are believed to be political new-comers.
Six candidates are standing as members of the only political party registered for this election, Forward Guernsey.
Another potential candidate has withdrawn his nomination after being told that he may be “pursued” if he continued as he did not intend to take the oath or play a part in the States if he were elected.
David Reed had previously stated that he wished to highlight a loophole in Guernsey’s election while saving the island money (by refusing to take the salary) and proving that the States could operate effectively with fewer members.
“I was asked if I was THAT David Reed and that if I was absolutely sure if I wish to proceed, the implication being, even if I am proven correct ultimately, I was going to be pursued for this,” he wrote on Facebook as part of a longer statement.
“It was deeply uncomfortable and appears to be the right point at which to discontinue this campaign as the implied personal risks have now exceeded their tolerable threshold.”
