Work on creating a new dedicated committee to take responsibility for housing in the next political term is ongoing, with an advert going live to recruit an Executive Officer to support the new office.

The States agreed to create the new Committee for Housing earlier this year, after a majority of current deputies decided that stripping certain powers from the mandates of Environment & Infrastructure, Employment & Social Security and Policy & Resources and putting them into the hands of a dedicated committee would help the next government prioritise housing.

Those opposing plans for the new committee said it would create a silo, cost more and does not address the real issue of actually delivering more houses.

One of the fears expressed over plans to create a new States committee was the increased costs it would attract.

One of the costs attached to creating a new committee, rather than leaving the mandate for housing split across three separate committees as it currently is, was highlighted as staffing costs.

It’s now clear that the new committee will add at least £50,000 to the States annual staff costs – which neared £300million in 2023 – with an Executive Officer being recruited.

The job description includes providing ‘proactive high-level executive and administrative support including preparing reports and correspondence, supporting parliamentary processes including drafting responses to Rule 11 and 14 questions, preparing
responses to Freedom of Information requests and media enquiries, co-ordinating and
collating the Committee agendas and minuting its meetings, monitoring actions and
managing the mail log’.

The post-holder would be paid between £45,858 and £54,018  per annum.

Any applications must be in by 6 May.
