The popular fundraising event took place this weekend, with 1,891 swimmers taking part over the 39 hours, swimming 645km collectively.

Teams of swimmers including schools, corporate organisations, and other groups as well as teams of family and friends swam the equivalent distance of crossing the Channel to Poole and back three times said the organisers.

The 46th annual swimarathon was raising money for GROW Ltd and other charities, and the Organising Committee Chairman, John Stuart said he thinks the total money raised will climb to more than £65k when all pledges have been fulfilled.

“The Skipton Swimarathon’s swimmers and their supporters have made a magnificent effort,” he said.

“With the usual pledges yet to be collected we can now see a target of £65k being achieved. Thank you to you all.”

The Swimarathon’s final total for 2022 will be split between GROW Limited – which has recently fundraised for a £3 million redevelopment – and other good causes.

Mr Stuart said: “I am delighted by what a success this year has been. We were concerned that, after the pandemic years, there might be some apathy, but the opposite has been true – we have been astounded by the enthusiasm of all involved.

“Our thanks go out to Guernsey public for their wonderful support and generosity, and of course our thanks go to Skipton International for their marvellous sponsorship of the Swimarathon.”

Tracey Hutchins, Manager of GROW Limited, agreed the event had been another huge success.

“We feel incredibly humbled by how the public have embraced our cause and dug deep to give back. This contribution from the Skipton Swimarathon will allow our charity to achieve so much more within our redevelopment, providing support for many years to come.”
