Expressions of Interest (EOI) from any potential ferry providers will need to include details from what vessel they’d be using, a proposed timetable and fare structure, and what support the service may require from the States.
The States of Alderney say the ideal seasonal service between Alderney and Guernsey during the 2025 summer season would operate with vessels up to 12-passenger capacity, offering at least two daily rotations for a minimum of five days per week, including Fridays and Sundays. It will run between the Spring Bank Holiday at the end of May, until the end of September.
In a statement announcing the EOI, the States add that any successful applicant will also have an option to extend for another two years, running in 2026 and 2027, subject to a review by both parties.
As part of that statement, the Chair of the Policy and Finance Committee, Bill Abel said “The seasonal ferry service has become an important and well-regarded addition to our transport offer over the last few years. It provides alternative travel options to the island and back-up for air passengers, and we look forward to seeing the interest from potential providers.”
You can find more details on the EOI on the States of Alderney Website here, and the “Invitation for Expressions of interest” here. The closing date for submission of EOI is February 14th 2025.
2024 saw the company Alderney Ferry Services (AFS) take on the challenge of providing a year round service for Ridunians and visitors alike. It took time for the larger “Dart Ferry” to get its proper paperwork. Having arrived in the Summer, it wasn’t until November that it got to sail.
Delays to issuing that licence were the subject of questions in the Alderney States in the middle of October, while the company was left in the awkward position of not knowing when it could take bookings, but having gotten onto the open waters it’s seemed to win over locals with a forum sharing the latest tender offer receiving comments supporting AFS. However like with most tenders in the Bailiwick, they’re routinely offered to make sure Taxpayers are getting good value for money.
It’s not expected to impact AFS as the company already has it’s 2025 schedule available to book, which will be running from 28 March until early October.
