The most northerly of the Channel Islands has a new piece of life saving kit that’s arrived just in time for Alderney Week.

Ambulance & Rescue Guernsey have announced the arrival of a new, state-of-the-art ambulance in Alderney, intended to replace the 2007 model and improve patient care, comfort, and operational efficiency.

It is equipped with a modern cardiac monitor that can stream real-time data to clinicians, a self-loading electronic stretcher and a powered carrying chair, which improves manual handling and patient transfers.

It also has enhanced lighting, better storage, and smart infection control surfaces.

The vehicle, a MAN TGE 4×4, is smaller than a Guernsey ambulance and was specifically chosen to navigate Alderney’s narrower roads. The four-wheel-drive capability should also allow it to access places a conventional ambulance could not.

To top it off, the ambulance is dressed for the part, with a unique livery that includes the Alderney flag.

Ambulance and Rescue have confirmed that the purchase of the life-saving vehicle was made possible through financial support from the States of Alderney.

According to Mark Mapp, Chief Executive of Ambulance & Rescue, this new vehicle represents a “step-change in the frontline ambulance capability in Alderney” and will “literally save lives”: “We are committed to providing the highest levels of care at all times and this ambulance allows us to do exactly that. The technology in this ambulance is absolutely world-class and we’re proud to be delivering this to the people of Alderney.

Mr Mapp continued: “It is a step-change in the frontline ambulance capability in Alderney and will literally save lives. Not only does it have the most sophisticated medical equipment to ever arrive on Alderney’s shores, it also allows for safer patient transfers through the use of a self-loading electronic stretcher for better manual handling and a powered carrying chair.”
