One charitable organisation has used its fundraising power to further its support of another charitable initiative in Guernsey.

Only Fools and Donkeys had already bought three adapted bikes which it had donated to the Wheels for You scheme.

Now it has also arranged for a bike trailer to help move the adapted bikes around the island so they can be used by more people.

The new trailer was launched at the Parkinsons Awareness Day last weekend.

“Transporting our tricycles to various events or venues has so far been very time consuming,” said Ian Brown, the co-Founder of Wheels for You.

“The new trailer can fit up to four bikes at a time, depending which ones we take, which makes a huge difference,” he said.

“Wheels For You has been running for about 18 months now but there are still plenty of people who have not had the opportunity to try the bikes. Having the trailer gives us the opportunity to not only run our weekly sessions but attend events like the Parkinsons Awareness Day and carry out more outreach work with charities, community groups and residential homes.”

The trailer has been sponsored by Butterfield.

“The ethos behind both the Wheels For You initiative and the success of the adapted bikes Only Fools Donkeys has donated to the charity has resonated strongly with us. Accessibility and inclusivity is hugely important and having the opportunity to watch the enjoyment those attending have gained from trying out the bikes, and the variety of disabilities and conditions that can be accommodated has been wonderful,” said Richard Saunders, Managing Director, Butterfield.

“We hope the trailer will enable Wheels For You to continue to expand the number of people this fantastic initiative can reach.”

While the Only Fools and Donkeys raise money by going on long cycling challenges, Wheels for You helps people who can’t use a traditional two wheeled bike also experience the joy of cycling.

The Only Fools and Donkeys are currently training to ride through France, Belgium and Holland this June to raise more money to support local good causes.
