A planning committee took two days to analyse various representations when deciding whether or not to back the extension.
Both the States of Alderney and the Government of Jersey wrote to the Eastleigh Local Area Committee supporting the extension of the runway, arguing that the Southampton route is essential for the islands.
“I do hope that you give due weight and consideration to our community,” said Annie Burgess, Chair of Alderney’s Economic Development Committee.

However, campaigners in the Eastleigh area successfully campaigned against the runway extension, arguing that the environmental impact would be too large.
The Southampton Airport Operation’s Director was disappointed with the decision.
“Naturally, we are very disappointed with the lack of support from the Eastleigh Local Area Committee,” said Steve Szalay.
While both Alderney and Jersey submitted representations supporting the runway extension, the States of Guernsey has remained silent. We asked, before and following the meeting, whether or not a representation was made to the council and Express was not given an answer.
The decision could still be overturned as a full meeting of Eastleigh Borough Council will be held on 8 April.
