Suspected drink drivers can’t choose to have a blood test instead of a breath test anymore.
Modern breathalysers are believed to be so accurate that a blood test isn’t necessary so Bailiwick Law Enforcement has removed it as a ‘Statutory Option’ for those under suspicion of committing the offence.
Guernsey Police said it’s part of wider law changes which will strengthen their powers around tackling drug driving and hazardous driving.
According to a spokesperson for Bailiwick Law Enforcement, this removal of ‘The Statutory Option’ aligns the Bailiwick with practices in the UK and will help speed up the process of bringing offenders before the Court.
”Removing this process known as “The Statutory Option” brings the Bailiwick in line with the UK and will speed up the time it takes to get an offender in front of Court.
“Breath testing equipment has been shown to provide reliable and accurate results consistently since its inception some 35 years ago. The legal limit remains 35ugs, but if you’re going to drive, the safe limit of alcohol is zero. Drink driving and drug driving have far-reaching consequences on people’s lives. We are committed to make our roads safe for all users.”
