A man who is already serving a prison sentence for drug offences will be staying behind bars for even longer after being sentenced for grievous bodily harm as well.
Wesley Guilbert was jailed for four years in December 2024 for the drug offences which included possession of cannabis resin, morphine, and MDMA and supplying MDMA and cannabis to other people.
In August 2023, two months after he was arrested in connection with the drug offences, Guilbert stamped on a man’s head, after punching him in the face and pushing him off a bar stool at the Brittania Inn.
46-year-old Guilbert appeared in Guernsey’s Royal Court earlier this week, where he was told that it was inevitable he would get another prison sentence.
“The community is shocked by such acts of violence and such behaviour must be deterred,” said Judge Catherine Fooks.
Jailing him for three years and four months, Judge Fooks referenced Guilbert’s criminal record and said only he can change the direction his life has taken.
“Your actions that evening in knocking your victim off the bar stool and deliberately stamping on his head were sickening. You had been pushed out of the pub after involving yourself in something that was not your business and told to stay out of it, which is what you should have done. Your victim has suffered a very serious injury and you have shown no genuine remorse. You are now 46 and you have a number of years in prison ahead of you. It is time for you to take responsibility for your actions and to make the changes you say you know are necessary, otherwise we will continue to see you in this Court. It is up to you Mr Guilbert.”
The court had heard character references on Guilbert’s behalf as well as evidence of adverse childhood experiences and trauma that he had experienced.
Judge Fooks said it is also to Guilbert’s credit that he is already making plans for work when he is released from prison.
However, she said he showed no evidence of genuine remorse for what he had done to his victim.

Guilbert’s existing prison sentence of four years was imposed after the Law Officers appealed when he was originally given a suspended prison sentence.
His new prison sentence of three years and four months will run consecutively to his four year sentence.
Guilbert was also ordered to pay his victim £1,135 in compensation, for which the court noted he had asked for time to pay, which will be arranged through HM Sheriff.
