Any commercial dog walkers, kennels, catteries, or other pet-related businesses, must apply for an ‘animal welfare licence’ by tomorrow.

The States of Guernsey issued a final warning this week that the paperwork must be in before the end of April.

The States said this new scheme will protect animals and public safety.

Applications submitted by the deadline will mean businesses have until the end of January next year to meet all standards while remaining operational.

The States said those conditions do not need to be met before the initial application, but warned that any existing businesses that miss tomorrow’s deadline, and any new start-ups, will have to pass an inspection and secure a licence before they can start operating.

Lorna Chadwick, Animal Health and Welfare Officer, said the deadline has been designed to help operators make improvements at a manageable pace.

“We’re really pleased most businesses have already submitted their applications, and inspections are now well underway. We’ve been impressed by the quality of services and care we’ve seen so far.”

She added: “We don’t want anyone to be caught out by missing the 30th April deadline, as applying on time gives  businesses the opportunity to make any necessary improvements at a manageable pace while continuing to operate.”

Applications can be completed through the States of Guernsey website.
