A new series of children’s books celebrating Guernsey’s wildlife, language and culture has just been released.

The series centres on Puffin and Booby – best flying friends – and has been adapted from a newspaper comic strip in a new set of illustrated books.

The stories follow their adventures across the Bailiwick together, teaching children lessons along the way.

While written in English, the books will introduce readers to the occasional Guernesiais word, which are translated in a glossary at the back of the book.

They are the first books from publisher Blue Ormer to be given the Guernsey Language Commission’s stamp of approval – the ‘Nou-z Est Pour L’Guernesiais’ trademark.

The books are written and illustrated by Adam Gillson, who works in Guernsey.

It’s not his first foray into Guernsey-inspired work, though, as he’s also adapted Victor Hugo’s ‘Toilers of the Sea’ into a graphic novel.

Joy Liggett of the Guernsey Language Commission said: “Two iconic sea birds engaging with our unique language – what fun! Adam must be congratulated for his innovative and creative approach towards introducing Guernesiais in this way.”

The first three books – ‘The Monster Mystery’, ‘The Foggy Day’ and ‘The Flying Pot’ – are available now on the island for £8.
