Anyone who is curious about Guernsey’s own language is invited to an event this weekend where it will be celebrated.

Being held at St Martin’s Community Centre on Saturday 8, between 14:00 and 16:00, it will give an opportunity to those who speak Guernesiais to converse with others while allowing those keen to learn a chance to find out about opportunities to do so.

This is the second public event organised by the Guernsey Language Commission to celebrate Guernesiais in this way.

Former Bailiff, Sir Richard Collas is Chairman of the Guernsey Language Commission.

He believes there is still much interest in the language with people still speaking it and wanting to learn it.

” We have been delighted by the level of interest in Guernesiais shown both by speakers and non-speakers which we see reflected in increased usage of the language.

“If you are interested in discovering  more or would like to know how you could help support the preservation and revitalisation of this important aspect of our heritage please do join us.”

The afternoon will include a chance for non-speakers to hear Guernesiais being spoken, while offering novice speakers a chance to practice to improve their fluency.

The organisers say there will be some “fun interactive sessions and performances of songs and poems too”.

Artisan stalls and organisations who use Guernesiais in their products or businesses on a regular basis will have their goods on display, demonstrating its relevance today.

Light refreshments will be available during the afternoon including Guernsey Gâche.
