Sir Richard Collas is asking that the Union flag is flown on 8 May, as Britain marks the end of the Second World War in Europe.

At 11:00, Guernsey residents are invited to join the rest of the British Isles in a two minute silence to remember all those who gave their lives fighting in the war.

Then, on 9 and 10 May the island will be flying the Guernsey flag to mark the 75th anniversary of its Liberation.

“This weekend, we remember those who endured one of the most difficult times in our island’s history and those who fought and sacrificed their lives to free them,” Sir Richard said.

“It comes at a time when we face our own challenges. We cannot pretend they are the same – the very nature of them is different – but the challenge we face now means very real hardship for some and reveals true examples of heroism in our community and for that reason I know VE Day and Liberation Day will both be especially poignant this year.”

As the corona virus pandemic continues, the Bailiff has asked that Guernsey residents only fly their flags if they are able to do so while keeping in line with the Public Health guidance.

Lots of virtual commemorations have been arranged for Liberation Day and people all over the island are invited to take part from the safety of their own homes.

The States have also asked separately that homeowners decorate with bunting and flags to signify #GuernseyTogether as the lockdown continues over the Liberation weekend.
