The upsurge in French visitors sailing in to St Peter Port is having a knock on effect across the islands, with Sark also seeing an influx of our continental cousins this summer.
Recently appointed Tourism Officer George Timpson said the summer season has gone so well in Sark so far – and he’s expecting visitors to continue making the trip over until the end of October, if the good weather continues.
“We get emails every day, constantly, and we have to point them in the right direction, because they can’t book directly through us. But, it’s been non stop pretty much through the summer, which is great for the island.
“The weather’s been amazing for the majority of the summer, and just walking around, it seems busier than normal, yes.”
With Brittany Ferries and Guernsey Ports both reporting increased numbers of passengers arriving into Guernsey through St Peter Port Harbour, Mr Timpson said businesses in Sark have also appreciated the extra footfall.
“It’s great for the island, because more people the merrier, and there’s definitely a lot more coming over, which is great,” he said.
To try and entice more visitors to travel to Sark, Mr Timpson and some other social media savvy residents are using Tik Tok to reach younger audiences.
“There’s a team of us working together on it at the moment,” he said.
“I’m just fronting the Tik Tok side of it, then we’re all working together with the Facebook and Instagram, etc.
“With the Tik Tok it’s aimed at the younger audience that won’t necessarily see the brochure was or be on Facebook as much. I think it definitely will make a difference,” he said.
Anyone who’s not yet been over to Sark this year has plenty of time to do so he added, with most businesses not winding up for winter before the end of October.
“If we stay busy, they tend to stay open. It’s the way it is over here,” Mr Timpson explained.
“There’s still plenty to do. The weather’s normally great, and the sunsets are beautiful at this time of year as well. It’s really something special in these months.”
Mr Timpson moved to Sark permanently to live with his grandmother having been a regular visitor throughout his life.
He graduated university before moving to Sark and is using his media marketing skills to benefit the island.
