A striking St Peter Port home with egg-like windows has scooped two design awards at an awards ceremony.
Judges for this year’s Guernsey Design Awards praised the “extraordinary attention to detail, craftsmanship and bespoke elements” that give Makepeace House – also known as La Coquere – its “distinctive character”.
With its flowing, organic design the building – near the bus terminus – has been compared to the work of legendary Spanish architect Antoni Gaudí, designer of the recently-completed Sagrada Familia cathedral in Barcelona.
The house was designed by Lovell Ozanne, in collaboration with renowned furniture designer John Makepeace OBE and built by Infinity Construction Ltd.
A spokesperson for the firm said the house “began with a wonderful concept design from John Makepeace, and it’s been a privilege to develop that vision”.
“This recognition reflects the care and collaboration that went into every stage of the project, and we’re proud to see Guernsey’s design talent celebrated this way,” they added.
The new building’s owners said they had their “fingers crossed” throughout the project but were “very, very excited with the building all the way along”.
The added: “We’ve been amazed and astonished at the skills and the patience that’s gone into the actual building.
“Everybody has been remarkable in the way it’s all gelled together. We’ve had no cross words instead we’ve had lots of fun.”
Makepeace House won the Single Residential New Build Award and the Mitch Sneddon Professional’s Choice Award.
It was one of four projects to pick up double awards, with The Wood Shed (designed by DLM Architects), Ty Mor (Tom Gaudion) and Shell House (Jamie Falla for Studio Otto) also claiming the honour.
