Jersey opened the scoring midway through the first half and led for most of the 90 minutes of normal time until Guernsey’s Ben Solway equalised with only seven minutes remaining to send the match into 30 minutes of extra time.

Jersey had a player sent off early in the second half of extra time. But Guernsey could not capitalise on their numerical advantage and instead conceded two goals in quick succession as Jersey regained the trophy.

The under-18 football inter-insular was last played in 2019, when it was won by Guernsey, before the covid-19 pandemic forced its cancellation in 2020 and 2021.

Yesterday’s fixture at St. Peter marked the 100th anniversary of the Junior Muratti. It was first played in 1922 for a trophy donated by the London Channel Islands’ Society.

The next fixture on football’s inter-insular calendar is the semi-final of the Muratti Vase between Alderney and Guernsey on 23 April. The following day, Guernsey and Jersey’s under-16 teams will play for the Nigel Gavey Trophy.
