The politicians in charge of immigration didn’t know the civil servant they’d recruited to manage the island’s population had emigrated from Guernsey.
Deputy Marc Leadbeater, President of Home Affairs, said the committee “was not aware that the administrator was not on island until relatively recently”.
“Once we became aware, we raised our concerns with Officers,” he added in a social media post.
Deputies had raised concerns that Gary Salter, Guernsey’s Director of Population Management, was living off the island.
Deputy Leadbeater said Home Affairs was “made aware [of Mr Salter’s living situation] during the last few months”.
“I don’t know the full details of how long he had been based off island as yet but I believe it’s been a considerable amount of time,” he added.
Mr Salter left his role earlier this week, according to a BBC report, and a temporary replacement has been approved by Home Affairs.
