A “humble” housekeeper who worked at Government House for almost a quarter of a century has been recognised in New Year Honours list.

Alice De Freitas was awarded a Royal Victorian Medal, which is a reward for personal service to the Sovereign or the royal family.

She retired from her position as the housekeeper at Government House at the end of June 2025 after almost 24 years.

Mrs De Freitas’s daughter Joanna said her “humble” mum had never dreamed of receiving such an award.

“I was the first person she told and she was very shocked but honoured,” she told Express.

“My mum is a very humble lady who hates being in the spotlight so this is a little outside her comfort zone.

“She feels very grateful and honoured to receive such an award.

“She never expected or dreamed of receiving such an award.”

Joanne explained that her mum’s highlight was being able to finally share the news with her wider family and friends.

“This award really took my mum by surprise, so she hasn’t made any plans to celebrate in a big way,” she said.

“She’s very humble and would say that simply sharing the moment with family and close colleagues is more than enough for her.

“For her, the recognition itself means a great deal, and she’s just grateful for the kindness shown by everyone at Government House.”

The other people from Guernsey to be recognised were Deputy Jayne Ozanne, who became an OBE for services to religion and the LGBTQ+ community and Helen Glencross, who became an MBE for services to heritage in Guernsey.

Gerry Le Roy has been awarded the BEM for services to public health in Guernsey.
