On the 4 December an early Condor Islander crossing from Jersey to Guernsey saw male passengers skip security. When staff were asked why, many passengers were told that it was because Ports of Jersey had a lack of male staff.

“This particular shift was unusual because we had no male staff available,” said a spokesperson.

When Express queried how this impacts the Ports’ requirements for meeting security regulations, the following statement was provided:

“Aviation and maritime security aim to ensure the safety of people and assets, but they operate under different regulations.

“At the airport 100% of passengers are screened. However, as the maritime risk level is different, screening is carried out on a random basis.

“This means any passenger may be required to submit to a search before entering the restricted area of the port, but not all passengers are screened.”

Despite not having any male staff available the spokesperson said: “Nonetheless we still met the regulatory requirements.”

“The UK Department for Transport, Maritime Security Division, sets out clear regulations and guidance for Port facilities. This is to ensure that the Port is compliant with the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) International Ship and Port Facility Security Code.”

Ports of Jersey is currently recruiting security officers to strengthen the team at Elizabeth Terminal. Available jobs are advertised ONLINE.
