Students, parents and staff were amongst the rubble and rebar today, as for the last time La Mare de Carteret held a GCSE results day.

Work is currently taking place on the Castel site to get the building ready for it’s future as a temporary Sixth Form Centre.

For the next academic year, La Mare’s remaining students are moving to Les Varendes High School, at the former Grammar School site.

The School had recently held events welcoming back former pupils earlier this summer, as a way to say À La Perchoine La Mare.

Jason Dodd, the Vice-Principal of La Mare, said students have done really well, and looked to the future of education for his remaining pupils: “It’s gone really well today, and the students are really, really pleased. Obviously, a bit of apprehension the night before, but I think we’ve seen lots of smiling faces this morning, so it’s really, really pleasing.

“Obviously, thinking ahead, it’s tinged with sadness, because it’s the last time that we will have a results day for GCSEs at La Mare, but also, on the flip side of that, we’re really, really excited with the opportunity at Les Varendes to welcome the students over there, and we’re really excited about the future at Les Varendes with all of those students and the body of staff as well.”

Its not yet been made public how the States schools fared for this year’s results, although an announcement is expected later today, (Thursday 21 August).

However, no matter the result, (says the article writer with his 3 GCSEs at C and above), students should be proud of what they’ve achieved across the board.

That’s a point Mr Dodd wanted to make crystal clear: “Each student achieves in their own right really, and actually, I think all the students have worked really, really hard. Some have achieved fantastic results. Some have worked really, really hard just to maximise their own potential.”

He concluded: “So we recognise that all students have worked really, really well and worked really, really hard and got what they needed for the next steps in life, and we will celebrate that.”

Guernsey’s private College’s have reported widespread success, with the Ladies’ College reporting in with 100% passing both Maths and English, while Elizabeth College reported 43% of grades being at the 9-7 level, (A*-A equivalent).

Meanwhile Blanchelande College announced “excellent GCSE results”, with nearly a third of all grades at the highest levels (9-7 or A*/A).
