Guernsey Electricity has to move a lamppost just days after installing it after members of the public mocked the utility’s work on Facebook.

A photo of the new lamppost, on the cycle path along Les Bas Courtils, was shared on the ‘Guernsey People Have Your Say’ forum.

It quickly attracted hundreds of comments and reactions, including a majority of laughing emojis, as many people agreed that it had been sited in a dangerous way causing an obstruction on the cycle path.

The lamppost was installed to light up the zebra crossing at the junction with Delancey Lane.

While some people claimed that cyclists don’t use the shared path with pedestrians, and instead cycle along the road, others said that the new lamppost could cause an accident because it is blocking the cycle path.

Either way, Guernsey Electricity has agreed to move it.

Commenting on the Facebook post within two hours of it being shared, the utility said “thank you all for your feedback on this streetlight installation – we do understand your concerns and will look into whether any improvements can be made”.

Later, Guernsey Electricity updated the concerned members of the public.

“We have met with Traffic and Highways this afternoon to discuss and have agreed to relocate the streetlight. Temporary measures will be put in place until the work takes place.”

When Express cycled along the path to see the lamppost on Thursday evening, two traffic cones had been placed around it.

Express asked Guernsey Electricity and Traffic and Highways Services for comment.

Traffic and Highway Services admitted that the lamppost was not put in the best place.

“The lamp post was installed to improve visibility of the crossing, however, it hasn’t been installed in the correct location and so it will be repositioned as soon as possible.

“Until then, some cones and reflective strips have been temporarily put out to make the column more visible for those cycling.”

Looking at other lampposts and traffic signs on poles along Les Bas Courtils and Les Banques, it looks likely that the lamppost could be relocated to nearer the kerb or on to the grass verge.
