Following this decision by the UK government, Express reached out to the States of Guernsey to see if the same moves will be made in Guernsey.

The Misuse of Drugs Advisory Group will now be discussing nitrous oxide at a meeting on 20 September. The Group comprises representatives from HSC, Guernsey Police and the Guernsey Border Agency. 

The UK announced its intention to ban the product earlier this year. At the time the Health Improvement Commission and Guernsey Police both said the use of NOS wasn’t a prevalent problem in the island. 

While the relevant authorities had no intention to follow suit earlier this year, the Advisory Group will still be discussing NOS this month. 

What is nitrous oxide? 

Nitrous oxide is a gas that – when inhaled – gives the user a short high. It often leads to feeling of light-headedness, euphoria and can give people the ‘giggles’, leading to its nickname (laughing gas). 

It commonly comes in small metal cannisters. Packaged this way the cannisters are used to prime whipped cream dispensers.
