Layby berths in St Peter Port to give boat owners more flexibility when planning trips, according to Guernsey Ports.
The laybys are for the use of all mooring holders in St Peter Port Harbour and, unlike the marinas, can be used at any time – no matter how high the tide is.
Kieran Higgs, Head of Ports Operations, said: “One of the main advantages of our layby facilities is that they provide all-tide access.
“For many local boat owners, that provides greater flexibility and convenience if their intended arrival or departure times fall outside of tidal windows. These facilities provide a practical short-term option that some boat owners may not realise is available to them.”
The local layby (outer) pontoon can be used for up to 24 hours by local mooring holders while the “west wide of the walk-ashore pontoons”, which is popular with people looking for a short stop near the town centre, can be used for up to 9 hours.
Shuttle service
Guernsey Marinas is also trialling a free shuttle service from the outer pontoon to shore during off-peak periods.
This is so people without tenders can still make use of the pontoons.
Mr Higgs said: “The passenger transfer service is another way that we’re making these facilities more convenient for local boat owners. Not every boat owner has access to a dory or tender, and we want to ensure as many local mooring holders as possible can enjoy time on the water.”
The cruise tender pontoon at Albert Pier is also available to local boat owners provided there is no cruise ship scheduled to arrive.
This is for quick drop-offs and pick-ups only and boats must be attended at all times.
Boat owners are asked to contact marina staff on VHF Channel 80 to manage layby availability.
