Pictured: The Chalet Hotel has been left without purpose for numerous years.

The derelict Le Chalet Hotel could still be converted into 15 new units of residential accommodation if planning permission is given.

A planning application has been submitted to convert the property – which sits above Fermain Bay.

The former hotel is owned by FV Holdings Ltd – which in turn is owned by the Handpicked Hotels Group.

Le Chalet and other properties previously owned by the Healthspan Group were bought by Handpicked in 2021.

The 4-star Fermain Valley Hotel, the 3-star Ziggurat Hotel, the former Ambassador Hotel, and Le Chalet were jointly acquired by FV Holdings Limited, a subsidiary of Hand Picked Hotels Holdings, in a “multi-million pound deal”.

The Fermain Valley Hotel is still open, while the former-Ziggurat Hotel closed at around the same time the properties were bought by FV Holdings Limited. It was then granted a change of use to allow the owners to use it for staff accommodation.

The Ambassador Hotel and Le Chalet Hotel had both closed prior to their purchase with the Ambassador site used as staff accommodation for many years already.

Le Chalet Hotel closed in 2012 and the Swiss-style building has been vacant ever since.

Previous owners had looked to redevelop the hotel or use it as staff accommodation, however those plans never materialised.

In 2019, the previous owners – Vista Hotels – were given permission to turn the 39-bed hotel into 15 residential units. That permission expired in September 2022, by which time the property had been bought by FV Holdings.

The new owners said at the time that they would not be able to complete any redevelopment of Le Chalet Hotel by the time the permission period expires.

The new planning application is similar in that it requests permission to redevelop the hotel as residential accommodation.

Views will be sought from the Constables of St Martin’s, Traffic and Highways Services, Environmental Health, and the States Agriculture, Countryside, and Land Management team.

Economic Development will also be consulted on plans to remove the hotel from the island’s visitor bed stock but as that permission has previously been given that is unlikely to be an issue this time round.
